From 1990 to 2004, the ship was named Nordic Empress. It was then renamed Empress of the Seas. From 2008 to 2016, it was part of the fleet of the subsidiary of Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd, Pullmantur Cruises, under the name Empress.

In spring 2016, it rejoined the parent company. This is the smallest and oldest ship in the Royal Caribbean fleet.

It operates 4-5 day cruises from Miami to the Caribbean. Since May 2017, it has been sailing from the port of Tampa with a stop in Havana.

In 2017, Empress of the Seas ranked 4th among mid-sized ships in the categories of Best Entertainment, Best for Value, and 7th in the Best Dining category on CruiseCritic, based on passenger reviews.

Following the latest health inspection by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the ship received a score of 94 out of 100.
