Brisbane is a city in Australia. It is the administrative center of Queensland. The population is 1.0 million people (2011). Within the metropolitan area, there are 2.2 million residents (2013). Brisbane ranks first in Australia and second in the world for population growth. It is located in eastern Australia, on the banks of the Brisbane River (hence the city's name) and the Moreton Bay of the Pacific Ocean. It is among the top one hundred global cities in the world. Greater Brisbane contributes 9% of the country's GDP.
Aboriginal people have inhabited the area of modern Brisbane since ancient times. In 1824, a penal colony was established here, and in 1842, when this colony was abolished, the city began to develop rapidly.
Today, this city represents an intriguing blend of a modern metropolis and a colonial town. The architecture combines the spires of Victorian churches with palm trees planted in front of skyscrapers. Extensive parks spread throughout the city. The surroundings of Brisbane are home to many zoos and reserves that will be of interest to children. The city is surrounded by wonderful urban beaches.
**Climate**
The climate of Brisbane is close to subtropical. There is a long wet season that lasts most of the year, and a cooler dry season that lasts from July to September, characterized by lower temperatures and less precipitation. The dry season features warm days and cool nights, occasionally dipping to light frosts. The average temperature in the summer months is +15 °C, while the average temperature in the winter months is +25 °C.
The city relies on rainfall. If the rains take on the character of a natural disaster, the Brisbane River, flowing through the city, overflows, leading to flooding.

## Main Attractions
**St. Stephen's Cathedral**
The cathedral of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Brisbane was consecrated in early December 1989, with the first stone laid back in the 19th century on December 26, 1863, the feast day of St. Stephen. The building is constructed from tuff, sandstone, and porphyry sourced near the city. Interestingly, the stained glass that adorns the cathedral's Gothic windows was brought from Munich, and the vibrant, whimsical reflections of the colored glass created on the stone floors and walls on sunny days continue to amaze parishioners even in the 21st century. Externally, the church appears very small and compact, while the interior spaces, thanks to high ceilings and thoughtful layout, seem simply vast, which is noted as a second interesting feature of the architectural solution.
**St. John's Cathedral**
The cathedral, built in the neo-Gothic style, is unique in that its construction spanned an entire century. Classic stone masonry, tall spires, pointed arch windows, and granite and basalt columns link the cathedral in Brisbane with examples of European Gothic art. The vision of the third Bishop of Brisbane, William Webber (who previously served as a vicar in London), to build the church with funds raised through public subscription could not be realized in a short time for financial reasons. Thus, construction, which began in 1887, was only completed in… 2009!
**Story Bridge**
Story Bridge is the hallmark of Brisbane and one of the city's "postcard views." This cantilever bridge connects the banks of the Brisbane River and is a historical landmark of the city; however, despite its appearance, it is not the oldest bridge in the city. The idea of constructing the bridge as a second bridge to relieve the traffic flow from the downstream Victoria Bridge was proposed in 1920. Anyone interested can climb its beams (not for the faint-hearted). The journey lasts 2.5 hours, and upon completion, a certificate confirming the feat is issued.
**Sir Thomas Brisbane Planetarium**
Thomas Brisbane made a significant contribution to the development of astronomy. The most important exhibit of the planetarium is a list in which Brisbane described 7,385 stars, compiled during his study of the southern hemisphere's night sky. Based on this list, a detailed star map was created by scientists. In a separate hall of the planetarium, there is a collection of meteorites found in Australia over the past hundred years. Next to the planetarium is a small theater where interesting lectures and presentations related to astronomy are regularly held. There is also an observation deck equipped with telescopes, allowing everyone to admire the beauty of the night sky, which was the subject of study for the Mayor of Brisbane.
## What to See
**Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary**
Opened in 1927, the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary is the oldest koala sanctuary in Australia and one of Brisbane's main attractions. It is home to around 100 koalas. The sanctuary is also home to kangaroos, emus, possums, dingoes, wombats, reptiles, and many birds. The main goal of the sanctuary is to protect koalas. Visitors can take photos with a koala for a small fee. There is a scenic route leading to the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary. Another way to get there is by ferry, which departs daily from the Victoria Bridge.
**Botanic Gardens**
The Botanic Gardens are one of Brisbane's main attractions. Located seven kilometers from the city center, at Mount Coot-tha, the park allows cars on weekdays, but vehicles are not permitted on weekends and holidays. The main exhibition features representatives of local Australian flora, but there is also an interesting collection of exotic plants. The garden is divided into several themed zones, including a Tropical Pavilion, Cactus Alley, Herb Garden, Bamboo Grove, Savanna Plant Pavilion, and Fern Garden. The Bonsai House, a classic Japanese garden, is particularly popular among visitors. Here, you can witness the annual cherry blossom, see a classic rock garden, participate in a tea ceremony, and even make an ikebana.

This picturesque area, located on the southern bank of the Brisbane River and known as "Parkland," includes a performing arts center, museum, state library, two colleges, art gallery, opera house, conservatory, and exhibition center. South Bank has many excellent restaurants, cafes, market stalls, and various street entertainment, with regular classical and pop music concerts. Another popular spot in South Bank is the artificial lagoon with a sandy beach. The South Bank cinema showcases the latest films. A true gem of the South Bank area is the 450-meter pedestrian and bicycle bridge that connects the southern edge of the area to the Botanic Gardens. It is spacious, clean, and most importantly - free.
**Gold Coast**
The Gold Coast is an elite resort in Australia, attracting around 3 million tourists each year. Located half an hour's drive from Brisbane, the Gold Coast is somewhat of an island. Bordered by the ocean to the south and "cut off" from the mainland to the north by the Nerang River, it boasts 30 km of uninterrupted beaches, entertainment centers, and shops, making it a tourist paradise. Not only the golden sands, bright sun, and good waves attract tourists to the Gold Coast. There are numerous amusement parks, the most notable being Sea World, Dreamworld, Movie World, Tropical Fruit World, Water Park, Lamington National Park, Ripley's Believe It or Not Museum, and the Park of Unusual Attractions.
**Sea World**
Sea World is a place of amazing entertainment. The Sea World aquarium offers a total of 12 interesting and unexpected attractions using pyrotechnics, optical technologies, animatronics, and a host of stunt performers: "Bermuda Triangle," "Viking Revenge," "Sesame Street Beach," "Ocean Rescue," "Fishy Fish," "Fierce Pirates," and more. For those wanting to swim and slide down water slides, there is a cozy water park. At Sea World, you can attend shows featuring trained orcas, dolphins, and sea lions.
