Four cruise ships in one day: Cagliari welcomed more than 11,000 passengers

On October 28, 2026, the port of Cagliari in Sardinia simultaneously welcomed Costa Smeralda, MSC Splendida, Viking Saturn and the sailing ship Star Flyer. More than 11,000 passengers and around 3,500 crew members were aboard the four vessels.

Cagliari Cruise Port called the event a record-breaking day. The figures refer to the people aboard the vessels and do not mean they all went ashore at the same time.

From large liners to a four-masted sailing ship

On this day, Cagliari welcomed ships of various sizes and offering different types of holidays. Costa Smeralda and MSC Splendida represented the large resort ship segment, Viking Saturn offered cruises in the upper premium segment, while the four-masted Star Flyer from Star Clippers offered intimate sailing voyages.

According to clarification from the Sardinia Port Authority, there were approximately 11 200 passengers aboard the ships in total. Serving four ships simultaneously required coordination between port services, transfer organizers and tour operators.

What does Cagliari offer cruise tourists?

A stop in Sardinia’s capital offers the chance to explore the historic center, stroll through the narrow streets of the Castello district, see the city’s landmarks, and sample local cuisine.

The port’s announcement also highlights the area’s archaeological heritage and the coastline’s natural scenery. Cruise calls generate demand for excursions, restaurants, retail, and tourism services in the city.

Raffaella Del Prete, head of Cagliari Cruise Port, stressed that cruise tourism engages a whole network of local businesses and helps introduce the region to an international audience.

The 2026 season could be a record-breaking one.

According to the published season forecast, Cagliari expects 181 ship calls and more than 600 000 passengers in 2026. That is approximately 11% more calls and 26% more passengers than in 2025.

The season calendar covers the period from 27 January to 27 December 2026, with 34 calls scheduled for October. These figures are the season plan and forecast; the final results will be known once the season has ended.

For tourists, this program means an opportunity to visit Sardinia on a cruise outside the summer season, too. An autumn trip can be devoted to the island’s cities, history, and cuisine.
