Lisbon - the capital and main port of Portugal, a beautiful city with a thousand-year history, located on the south-western coast of the Iberian Peninsula. This is the westernmost capital in Europe. The city stretches along the Portuguese coast as far as the many-kilometer-long beautiful beaches of Alentejo. Lisbon is a large mononational city with a population of over half a million residents. 97% of Lisbon’s residents are Portuguese. As early as 1200 BC, archaeological evidence indicates there was an ancient trading port here. For more than three hundred years the city was under Arab rule and even was the capital of a separate Muslim state. This is reflected in Lisbon’s architecture: many buildings and structures in the city have distinct features of Moorish culture.

Lisbon is known for its surprisingly mild Mediterranean climate and is one of the warmest and sunniest European capitals. In spring and summer, the average air temperature is +28 °C. In autumn and winter, the average temperature in the city is - +10 °C.

Kellush Palace

The most beautiful palace in Lisbon, the residence of Portuguese kings, built in the mid-18th century. Today, not only all the rooms of the palace are open for visiting, but also a vast garden complex of incredible beauty.

Mafra Palace

The second famous palace in the city, the largest in the country, and renowned for its bell-ringing. Almost a hundred bells are installed on the palace’s towers.

St Engracia Church

One of the most majestic examples of unique Portuguese Baroque architecture-the Church of Saint Engracia. Its construction began in the 17th century and was only completed in the 20th. In the second half of the 20th century, the church became a National Pantheon.

Belf Tower

The city’s symbol is the Belem Tower, built in 1514 as a seafaring defensive fortification. The tower is incredibly beautiful when viewed from the sea, rightly considered one of the most beautiful examples of military architecture.

Old Town

The main charm of Portugal’s capital lies in its many narrow streets that run through the entire city. You can stroll along them endlessly, admiring beautiful historic houses. Of particular interest is the old Arab quarter of Alfama, one of the few areas to have survived the terrible earthquake of 1755. The most beautiful riverside promenade along the Tagus River is also ideal for leisurely walks.

Lisbon Zoo and Oceanarium

Both adults and children will be delighted by a visit to the Lisbon Zoo and the Oceanarium. At the zoo, you can enjoy a great picnic and watch the dolphin show.

Embark on a gastronomic journey

Lisbon is known for its wonderful culinary traditions and excellent drinks-wine, liqueurs, coffee, and tea. It’s so pleasant to enjoy traditional cheeses, sausages, and hams, to sample fragrant coffee, port wine, and ginjinha-the Lisbon cherry liqueur-in the cozy cafés and restaurants throughout the city. Be sure to try a truly amazing dish with an excellent combination of ingredients-pork with shellfish (Carne de Porco Alentejana). Don’t miss Casa Brasileira-a famous café where they serve the classic Portuguese dessert-pastéis de Belém tartlets.

Beaches of the Lisbon Riviera

Beach holiday lovers can head to the resorts of the Lisbon Riviera, located not far from the city. The most scenic and cozy resorts are Estoril, Cascais, and the Costa Azul coastline.
