Description — Muscat, Oman

One of the most beautiful cities on the Arabian Peninsula is rightly considered the port of Muscat-the capital of Oman, located at the foot of the mountains deep within a bay. It captivates with its amazing atmosphere, born from the combination of rocky mountains, a picturesque bay, narrow streets, and ancient buildings. Oman is the oldest independent state in the Arab world.

Muscat stretches for 200 km along the coast. It is divided into 5 districts: Al Muthrah, Bausher, Seeb, Al Amerat, and Qurayyat. Muscat in translation means “the place of falling.” The point is that the rocks here drop steeply down to the sea, enclosing the city on all sides with a natural wall-fortress. Muscat is a true oasis created by human hands, because in Oman there are practically no rivers or lakes-many desalination plants take care of their work.

Climate

Muscat is one of the hottest cities in the world. The average summer temperature is over +34 C, while in winter it is about +26 C. The best time to visit is from September to April.

Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque

Grand Mosque of Sultan Qaboos is the third largest mosque in the world. Foreigners can enter the Grand Mosque of Sultan Qaboos every day except Thursday and Friday.

What to see

Old Market of Mâtrah

Muttrah is the oldest market in the country, located in the city center. Here you can buy silver and gold jewelry, sandalwood products, aromatic oils, Omani knives, and coffee. You can bargain if the purchase amount exceeds 1 RO.

Spend the day at the beach

All of Muscat's beaches are sandy. There are designated fishing spots. The city also has a yacht club and a sea club in the Bay of Roda.

Muscat Sightseeing Tour

The tour starts at the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, a magnificent architectural complex. Its architecture and interior décor are unique to such an extent that you will not find anything similar anywhere in the Middle East (to visit the mosque, women must wear a headscarf or shawl, a long skirt or trousers, and a blouse with long sleeves; men must wear long trousers). Next, the tourists head to the delightful Muscat district called Muttrah. The next stop is the Old Muscat area with Al Alam Palace, the residence of Sultan Qaboos, with its fairy-tale towers crowned with golden and blue domes, the ancient forts of Mirani and Jalali. Also located here is the Az-Zubair Museum with an excellent collection of traditional weapons, Omani clothing, precious jewelry and household items, as well as examples of modern and traditional art.
